When Ruby woke up on her tenth birthday, something about her had changed. Something frightening enough to make her parents lock her in the garage and call the police. Something that got her sent to Thurmond, a brutal government “rehabilitation camp.” She might have survived the mysterious disease that had killed most of America’s children, but she and the others emerged with something far worse: frightening abilities they could not control. Now sixteen, Ruby is one of the dangerous ones. When the truth comes out, Ruby barely escapes Thurmond with her life. She is on the run, desperate to find the only safe haven left for kids like her—East River. She joins a group of kids who have escaped their own camp. Liam, their brave leader, is falling hard for Ruby. But no matter how much she aches for him, Ruby can’t risk getting close. Not after what happened to her parents. When they arrive at East River, nothing is as it seems, least of all its mysterious leader. But there are other forces at work, people who will stop at nothing to use Ruby in their fight against the government. Ruby will be faced with a terrible choice, one that may mean giving up her only chance at having a life worth living.

  • Divergent

    Veronica Roth

    2010 · 487 pages · 16 reviews

    Others: Mostly positive

‘Divergent’ is the first in a trilogy of dystopian, YA novels by Veronica Roth. The book is written from Beatrice Prior’s (Tris), point of view and is written in short chapters making it easy to put down and pick up again. The story is fast paced with full on action throughout. It contains elements of humour and romance, alongside some seriously brutal scenes, especially during Tris’s initiation. There is also quite a few though provoking moments. This was one of the first YA novels that I read and I found myself hooked right through to the very last word. The scenes are described in detail giving you a clear picture and making it easy to visualise the on goings in your head. Tris can be a little moody at times and doubts herself too much, but this only adds to her good nature, fun, determined and strong personality which we see blossom throughout The ending wasn’t what I expected, thus my need to get the second book, ‘Insurgent’, straight away. I Needed to know what happened next. I surprisingly found myself enjoying Divergent much more than I first thought I would, and thus my love of YA novels began. Divergent was made into a movie back in 2014. If you have seen the film but not read the book then you are missing out on vital aspects of the plot and characters, that didn’t appear in the film. I enjoyed the film, just not as much as the book.

Not a fan

I wasn't really connected to these characters and didn't really care a ton about this world... it was kind of the end of the young adult dystopian phase and I was just over it.

I've only read the first two books because I really did not enjoy it, unfortunately. I feel bad if I call it trash cuz I met this author twice, and she is super nice. But honestly, the second book was so incredibly boring for me that I just have terrible memories of it.

Loved it

so in the future there's this disease that kills teens sadly yes but the surviving team gets these crazy dark creepy powers just think x-men meets teenagers meets a step society that is the darkest minds it is fantastic

Loved it

Another one that I read pretty early on during the year, but I just it was so good. In this universe, the surviving children in America have these weird and wonderful abilities.

Loved it

I think Never Fade is my favorite out of the two only because the ending is really intense, but overall, it's a really great series and I would highly, highly, highly recommend reading it before the third one comes out because hopefully it's coming out next year.
