Memoirs of a Spacewoman (1962)

Naomi Mitchison

Others: Positive

Naomi Mitchison, daughter of a distinguished scientist, sister of geneticist J B S Haldane, was always interested in the sciences, especially genetics. Her novels did not tend to demonstrate this, and she did not publish a Science Fiction novel until almost forty years into her fiction-writing career. This novel works effectively for readers who usually eschew the genre and prefer more traditional narratives. Explorers like Mary are an elite class who consider curiosity to be Terrans' supreme gift, and in the novel she more than once takes risks that may destroy her life. Her voice, as she records her adventures and experiments, is individual, attractive and memorable.

From rear "No one projects herself more penetratingly into the psyche of the women of future centuries than Judith Merril. With the probe of her imagination, as precise and powerful as a space shot, she envisions the problems they will face and how those problems will try their the mother whose newborn bears the effects of radiation; the girl in whose body a new race must begin; the women who must rule a generation-spanning search through space for new settling grounds; the woman who must be all women to the male crew of a space ship. No matter how mechanized our journeys into space become, inside the space suits we are human; and Judith Merril predicts we always will be."

Irene, a rebellious product of an American 1950s upbringing, has fled from a repressive and sexist society into a life of apparent equality and adventure as part of the elite Trans-Temporal Authority's cadre of travelers. Under the tutelage of Ernst, a friend/lover and teacher/father, Irene has achieved status and dignity. Irene and Ernst are assigned to a Muslim world where they meet Zubedeyeh, a young girl whose creativity is being transformed into madness by the male chauvinistic society in which she lives. Vowing to rescue her, Irene unleashes a destructive cycle of violence. Originally published in 1978, The Two of Them is a powerful portrait of a future sexist society. This modern classic conveys its politics with rigor and complexity, in a story filled with suspense and unforgettable characters.
