especially the second book I didn't like the direction it took and again another book that sort of like thesis the ish in the same way that like Babel is not in the same exact like context or whatever but I just was very disconnected from the characters

both were solid three stars
this one was like fine but it was basically storytelling of the original man like they didn't really add a ton to it the characters continue to not really have any agency
the World building and the commentary is excellent the distance that I had from the characters which I kind of had with the poppy War as well but to a lesser extent because I really liked our main character in poppy War where here I felt like a distance from all of them
there were some pacing issues at the beginning the some of the characters weren't really like acting or feeling like themselves there was just a lot of like characters making dumb decisions that didn't really feel like it felt like them and there was like a lot of stuff happening but without necessarily the stakes that the first book I just got like very muddled overall that's how I describe this book so while I still enjoyed it was like a 3.5 3.75
it has all the ingredients of things that I should like so it was like a three for me but it almost put me in a reading slump
I thought I was going to love like I was so convinced it was gonna be a five star book for me because people were like oh it's kind of like the Wayfarer series meets godomas things that I love this book just didn't have enough time for me personally there were so many threads
this was so much more like slice of Lifey and just a deviation in a way that I just wasn't resonating with so again another like 3.5 star
this was just overly written her writing is like a little bit just too much a little bit pretentious but like in the way that she's trying to sound pretentious it's very like put on and I didn't find myself super invested the ending left me invested enough to continue with the series
I was a solid four I didn't hate it I didn't hate the series but I loved the poppy War so much as a first book and this was more of a letdown for the second one it just felt like it dragged a lot
I read the whole thing last year and it was solidly fine but I thought it would be possibly a new favorite
