  • Lady Anna

    Anthony Trollope

    1874 · 444 pages · 2 reviews

    Others: Positive

A Victorian Gothic novel with the twin themes of bigamy and class difference as the base. A complicated plot, well developed ideas, and very convincing characters on the whole. Two exceptions to Trollope's usually powerful women are Lady Lovel, who is almost demonic, and the Lady Anna herself, who seems very changeable although she is immensely loyal to the working class man to whom she is engaged. Although it is not Trollope's most memorable novel, it remains one of his most engrossing.

    1881 · 536 pages · 2 reviews

    Others: Positive

Ayala's Angel showcases Trollope's great theme: the ways in which the conflicts between money and affection shape the dance of courtship and marriage among the gentry and middle class in Victorian England. Ayala & Lucy Dormer are sisters left penniless on the death of their artist-father and thrown upon the mercies of their relatives where they navigate the waters of family, money, love & marriage.

  • The Awakening

    Kate Chopin

    1899 · 221 pages · 6 reviews

    Others: Overwhelmingly positive

The Awakening is a novel by Kate Chopin, first published in 1899. Set in New Orleans and on the Louisiana Gulf coast at the end of the 19th century, the plot centers on Edna Pontellier and her struggle between her increasingly unorthodox views on femininity and motherhood with the prevailing social attitudes of the turn-of-the-century American South. It is one of the earliest American novels that focuses on women's issues without condescension. It is also widely seen as a landmark work of early feminism, generating a mixed reaction from contemporary readers and critics.
