why we’re all escaping to fantasy & the middle ages again
Books like Blood Over Bright Haven and Babel use fantasy to critique colonialism.
some of my favorites are, of course, the Broken Earth trilogy, which is an epic escapist fantasy, but it also heavily critiques discrimination and is a huge metaphor for how we exploit Mother Earth, so to say.
The Hunger Games, which yes, is a very fun and escapist young adult fiction book and movie trilogy, but can clearly also be used to convey a message, convey our opinions about our current modern world.
If you think of Lord of the Rings, it kind of has the same vibe. It has like a vaguely medieval Renaissance setting. Especially the hobbits have this simple lifestyle.
