Books that would otherwise be making a strong case for inclusion are A Fire Upon the Deep by Vernor Vinge and A the Sky by Robert Silverberg, both of which I really enjoyed this year.
Despite it being 900 pages long, I've read this three or four times, and I get something different, something more from it each time.
However, the fact is I've read June so often that my original copy here is falling apart and I enjoy it more each time that I read it.
I love this book and read it repeatedly when I was younger. I really enjoyed the war games that the kids are trained to play, the rivalry between the groups of children, and the way that Ender builds his team and his tactics to beat more experienced players.
That isn't the case with Pandora's Star, which is another plus-size book that I've been happy to dive into more than once, along with its sequel Judas Unchained. This is unapologetically space opera.
At number 10 is Red Thunder by John Varley. It's an absolute hoot. I read this so often that I wore my original book out.
Once again, in spite of its considerable girth, this is a book that I've read several times. Seven Eves is a fantastic book and I thoroughly recommend it.
The Algebraist was published in 2004 and is a big, beautiful book and I've read it two or three times. There is a lot going on in this book, and I love it and I've got something different from it each time that I've read it.
I enjoyed the post-apocalyptic atmosphere that Wyndham created and I thought the extra difficulty of most of the population being blinded served to exacerbate the sense of fear, helplessness, and isolation.
The Legacy of Heorot by Larry Niven, Jerry Pournelle, and Steven Barnes is another book that I've read to death. But fortunately, I wasn't reading those reviews and I swallowed the story hook, line, and sinker.
It's a great story and a comfort read and I really like it.
