What To Read After The Book Of The New Sun

Reviews10

it's an A to Z of character profile a glossery of names and terms Maps synopsis and so much more meticulously researched and essential for any wouldbe book of the new Sun connoisseur

PeaceGene Wolfe
Loved it

peace is a psychological fantasy ghost story it's probably best if I paraphrase from genan Wolf himself the basic idea is that a man has died and he is haunting his own mind his own past

PiranesiSusanna Clarke
Loved it

short but Punchy novel about a character called piranesi who lives in a world of infinite halls and rooms lined with statues he thinks that he's always lived in that place and that there's only 15 people in the whole world piranesi records every day in his journal but flicking back through the pages he can't even remember writing the old entries

this is one of pinch's shorter works and a great introduction to his literary puzzles if you loved following searan through seemingly Random Encounters with people who obliquely explained scientific economic and historical Concepts to him you'll enjoy watching the main character Eda pamas do the same thing as she searches for a shadow post office

The Dying EarthJack Vance
Loved it

has a very similar science fiction in fantasy clothing Vibe it too is set in the far future where the sun is dying and Humanity is on its last legs what first appears to be Wizards using traditional fantasy magic and spells is mostly explained to actually be Mega Advanced scientific applications it's a fascinating texture of a medieval style existence and aesthetic but camping in the ruins of once great civilizations and Technology

I would say that fifth head is even more challenging than the book of the new sun in places it has that same mesmerizing style but the rewards for paying attention and rereading are huge it's brilliant

The Wizard KnightGene Wolfe
Loved it

typical wolf displaying a traditional fantasy story with dragons questing and magic swords but with the twist of linking it to the modern world and shrouding the tale with dream logic and fragmented storytelling

it's about the sorcerer or demigod hired to accompany a Trader's Caravan through the treacherous will deeps a dangerous weave of Shifting worlds that none but the gods dare enter safely it sounds like weird fantasy but there may be something else going on as well gorgeous pros and deep interrelated character profiles
