And I thought this was so compelling. I really loved the bond and the relationship between the sisters as well as the relationship between the mother and our teen daughter. I think it deals really well with like grief and family and love and loss, etc. at its core, so really beautiful.

It's a very clear metaphor for capitalism and poverty and class. And it's really well done and really, really creepy because our protagonist has to survive in what she hopes to be this liberating new scenario, but ends up being much darker in its own way.

So my next book is more of a novella than an actual novel, but it manages to pack such a punch in so few pages. It's a really impactful metaphor as well as just being a really compelling story with a fantastic protagonist.

And you will just devour it. You will speed through it. It is a page-turner that is incredibly compelling.

It uses the horror genre to explore those themes and how that kind of hatred festers and grows and is like used against people so well, and there's so much raw emotion in this book. It is tangible and it stays with you.

They're very claustrophobic. They're very thought-provoking like each individual story has you thinking. It really like gets inside your mind and then stays there. So I think that is a mark of an impactful short story collection and this is the case for both of them.

It will take you on a surprising emotional journey. And if you like sort of eco-horror and sci-fi and themes of like the planet and what's next for humanity, then you'll really, really enjoy this one. I thought it was very, very clever.

I genuinely found it quite insidious and creepy reading the repetition of that phrase throughout this book, and the way that the book used the diary and language and the sense of something's coming but not quite being here yet to like to hang over you. It felt like there was something behind my shoulder whilst I was reading and I found it quite ooh creepy, which I guess is what you want from horror.

I read these two short story collections by the same author almost back to back and I can't entirely remember which stories were in which. I just thought they were both phenomenal collections. They're very beautifully written. Mariana Enriquez is one of those authors that uses beautiful prose to contrast with horrific themes and I find that a very effective way of writing.

It's a beautiful blend of lush, gorgeous, imaginative fairy tale prose with very, very disturbing, gut-wrenching, heartbreaking themes. It's a book that explores something very serious through horror, which is something I think horror can do incredibly well.
