I really enjoyed Ammonite and I suspect that I'll be thinking about it for quite a while to come. I give Ammonite nine out of 10.
I tier-rank the 12 (mostly) SF books I read in May - but which is Book of the Month?

I love the whole arc of the book and I thought that the ending was perfect. I give The Buffalo Hunter 9 out of 10.
And Children of Memory was a letdown in comparison. I didn't get on with that as I said to anything like the same extent.
For me, while I did very much enjoy Children of Time, the other two offered diminishing returns for me, especially so with Children of Memory, which I didn't get on with at all.
But I think Children of Strive is a return to form. Probably at least on a level with Children of Ruin. As a result, I give Children of Strive eight out of 10.
For me, while I did very much enjoy Children of Time, the other two offered diminishing returns for me.
I enjoyed Darklight, and I'm sufficiently invested, to read on and complete the trilogy. I give Darklight 7 out of 10.
I found myself thinking it was a little bit clunky in places, a bit obvious, but there was enough going on to hold my interest and it certainly wasn't a challenging read. I definitely thought that it was good enough to warrant reading on to the rest of the books.
It is a strange book. I mean, it's not Anna Kavan strange, but there is a dreamlike quality to Carter's prose that I really enjoyed.
Powers brings his version of London to a vivid life, and I think this was my favorite aspect of The Anubis Gates. I really enjoyed the book.
Overall, I'd say that I'm invested. I want to see how they conclude the story in book three and I think I also heard somewhere that there'll be a TV show and I'll be interested to see how they make that work.
So, I didn't think that The Mercy of Gods was awesome or anything, but I think it did a perfectly good job of teeing up the rest of the trilogy.
I enjoyed revisiting this book. I think I got more from it the second time around.
I did find myself rooting for Harry and Michelle, hoping that they would find enough common ground, enough shared perspective upon which to build a lasting relationship. I give Two Tribes 7 out of 10.
