    Others: Positive

Bag of Bones is a 1998 horror novel by American writer Stephen King. It focuses on an author who suffers severe writer's block and delusions at an isolated lake house four years after the death of his wife. It won the 1999 Bram Stoker Award for Best Novel, the 1999 British Fantasy Award for Best Novel, and the 1999 Locus Award for Best Dark Fantasy/Horror Novel. The book re-uses many basic plot elements of Daphne du Maurier's Rebecca, which is directly referenced several times in the book's opening pages; however, the relation of these elements (including a wife who is dead as the book opens, her posthumous effect on future romance, a drowning, and house haunted by the memories of previous inhabitants) to the plot and characters is markedly different. When the paperback edition of Bag of Bones was published by Pocket Books on June 1, 1999 (ISBN 978-0671024239).

    Others: Overwhelmingly positive

The Shining is a 1977 horror novel by American author Stephen King. It is King's third published novel and first hardback bestseller; its success firmly established King as a preeminent author in the horror genre. The setting and characters are influenced by King's personal experiences, including both his visit to The Stanley Hotel in 1974 and his struggle with alcoholism. The book was followed by a sequel, Doctor Sleep, published in 2013. The Shining centers on the life of Jack Torrance, a struggling writer and recovering alcoholic who accepts a position as the off-season caretaker of the historic Overlook Hotel in the Colorado Rockies. His family accompanies him on this job, including his young son Danny Torrance, who possesses "the shining", an array of psychic abilities that allow Danny to see the hotel's horrific past. Soon, after a winter storm leaves them snowbound, the supernatural forces inhabiting the hotel influence Jack's sanity, leaving his wife and son in incredible danger.

  • A New Kind of Clean

Haunting, philosophical horror for these modern times about what one aspiring actress is willing to give up in exchange for making her dreams come true—a groundbreaking collaboration from the author of I'm Thinking of Ending Things and the filmmaker of Our Father, the DevilMissy Djalo has been pounding the pavement for several years, running from audition to audition, juggling a dead-end security job, no closer to her dream of playing Helena in A Midsummer’s Night’s Dream. Since Missy’s perpetually broke and desperate for a change, a commercial audition for a cryptic company appears to be the light at the end of the tunnel—the big break she’s been waiting for. But as she journeys deeper into the experimental audition, boundaries are crossed, day becomes night, and the limits of reality and fantasy are increasingly blurred, all pushing Missy towards a critical decision.Told in spare, hypnotic prose, A New Kind of Clean is a surreal, philosophical suspense story about memory, identity, ambition, and reality; how the lines between what's real and what's not are becoming increasingly blurred; and how much we are willing to forfeit our individuality, our memories, our relationships, our identities, as we give ourselves over to the illusion and artifice of a virtual life that more closely mirrors our fantasies.
